Whenever a Hollywood motion picture is produced the aim is to create a movie that the public loves and that will become a smash hit. Take a wonderful story, throw in a few impressive stars along with some special effects and voila’, a huge box office success. But it doesn’t always happen that way. Sometimes a movie will include everything that you think might make it a success and it still fails at the box office. There is no such thing as a sure thing in Hollywood.
The amount of money that can be used up on a movie in order to make a blockbuster winner seems to be inexhaustible. But the reality of the matter is that until the film hits the box office and in fact brings in huge receipts in ticket receipts it is a gamble. Of course, there are always those directors who seem to have the magical touch and there are stars who have the magic to be able to guarantee a blockbuster for awhile, if you look at past history even the most well-liked actors have acted in box-office disasters.
Hollywood has brought us what seems like millions of movies and it would seem that they would know exactly what the public wants to see. However, popular opinion is changeable and there are no sure things. Sometimes a big-budget movie with all of the seeming best components for victory still fails miserably at the box office.
A relatively recent and wonderful case of this trend is the 2005 film “Sahara”. What is ironic is that this film essentially did reasonably well at the box office, opening with $18 million in the first weekend and generating $122 million in gross-box office sales. However the film was exceedingly high-priced to make and it ended up actually losing money. The movie had expenses of $281.2 million throughout production but only brought in revenues of $202.9 million for one of the biggest financial losses in Hollywood history.
Contrast that to another celebrated film from’99, ‘The Blair Witch Project”. Although the supposed expenses of making the motion picture vary with diverse information, the highest evaluation is that it cost about $100,000 to make. The motion picture went on to gross over $248 million worldwide making it the movie with the maximum ratio of box office sales to production cost in American filmmaking history until it was exceeded by “Paranormal Activity” in 2009.
Clearly one key to having a runaway success hit is to create a movie that results in a lot of media exposure and frenzy. Media buzz helps to make expectation and causes a ticket sellout on the opening weekend. However, the movie must continue to bring in receipts after the opening to actually be deemed a success.
While Hollywood has brought us many, many motion pictures and it would seem that they would have an impression of just what will work to produce a runaway success and what will not work, the fun and excitement for movie attendees and producers is the truth that you never can tell for sure. A particular actor starring in your motion picture may seem like a sure thing, until it’s not. A certain sort of film may seem like a sure thing, until it is not.
There will always be those shocking box office surprises, either the unanticipated blockbuster hit or the failure that no one could foretell. And that is part of the magic and appeal of movies and Hollywood; you never know just what might be the huge box-office hit.
