Benefits of Gaming

December 7th, 2009

People love to play videogames for a great many reasons. There are gamers that love the challenge of achieving a high score while also arriving at high levels of the game. They particularly enjoy doing this with their favorite games. But, what is it about their favorite games that actually make them favorites? It would seem the fantasy appeal of role-playing that allows the games to be so attractive to many players.

Look at it this way: a person that idolizes the idea of playing major league baseball can lose himself in a videogame based on baseball. Does this mean the person lives a Walter Mitty fantasy existence? No, this is not the case at all. More than likely, the individual’s suspension of disbelief is what leads to the player delving deeply into the game and becomes the videogame character on a subconscious level.

Upon reading such a description, some may wonder if there is anything inherently wrong with falling so deeply into a realm of suspension of disbelief. The answer to this is no because most people are completely unaware of the process. It is witnessed and forgotten on the subconscious level. It is also the subconscious level that attracts someone to purchase the game in the first place.

How does such a process occur? Well, if often happens without the gamer even knowing about it. Returning to the aforementioned baseball example, a person may have a deep and sincere affinity for the game. This affinity is what attracts such an individual towards the videogame version of baseball when he comes across it. And, of course, this contributes to his purchasing decision.

Again, there is nothing unhealthy whatsoever with such a process. The ability to step into the shoes of a major league sports player through the conduit of a videogame system can be a rewarding time for those looking for a little levity. Far too much is presented in the clich of the stereotypical gamer/role-player. Really, the process of stepping into a videogame fantasy figure is little more than a mild diversion. It is not a means of escape as many have suggested.

In many ways, there are positive traits that can be derived on the subconscious level. For example, someone that likes to step into the costume of a superhero in a videogame can also pick up on the positive traits that heroes represent. These mythical role models can have an impact on the behavior of a person through the impact of the game on the subconscious.

Here is something many folks will find surprising: there are psychology books written on the subject of videogames and much of what has been written reflects positive opinions. Professionals involved with honest psychological studies of videogames will develop helpful and highly therapeutic benefits of gaming.

Videogames are more than just an idle leisure time pursuit. They can also be a window in the motivations and inner traits of the gamer. This is true even when the gamer himself may not even be aware of it.
